A dark blue field with a Union Jack, representing New Zealand’s British Commonwealth heritage, and four five-point red stars, outlined in white, make up this nation?s flag, which was adopted in 1902 ? although it was actually introduced in 1869. The Union Jack is appointed to the upper left hand quarter. The stars, positioned at the right, are laid out to represent a southern cross.
